Restart your Xbox

This seems like a simple one, and you've likely already tried it. But it goes without saying that restarting your Xbox is the first step you should try when experiencing any crash issues. By completely powering off the Xbox console and then turning it back on, you can effectively clear caches and potentially resolve any crash or black screen issues experienced on the Xbox.

To restart your Xbox:

  1. Remove any accessories you have connected to the Xbox console
  2. Press and hold the Power button on the front of the console until it turns off
  3. Unplug the console for 2-5 minutes
  4. Plug it back in and reboot the console
  5. Retest the game and see if the issue persists

Ensure your games are updated

If you set your Xbox to automatically update games and apps in Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates, your games will be updated as new versions become available.
If a game hasn’t been updated, the update is either unavailable or not installed. The fastest way to update a game is to make sure you’re online, then launch the game.

Delete save data from your game

Sometimes, crashes can be caused when the local data associated with a title has been damaged.

  1. Ensure that you’re signed in to an Xbox account
  2. Find the game you are getting crashes with in your dash and press the Options button on your controller
  3. Choose Manage Game
  4. Select your profile from the right hand side of the screen
  5. Open Data and choose to Delete Data From Everywhere

Please Note: This will permanently delete any progress or customisations that you may have made in the game so far.

Change your User Profile

Some crashes might be associated with users' gaming profiles. To troubleshoot this, you can try creating a new profile or utilising an existing one on your console. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller
  2. Select Profile and System
  3. Choose Add or Switch

If your console already has multiple profiles, switch to a different profile and retest the game to see if the issue resolves.

Reinstall the problematic software

Sometimes crashes can be resolved by simply uninstalling and reinstalling the software that is crashing. Before you can reinstall a game or app, you must first uninstall it from the console's hard drive. To uninstall a game:

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide, then select My games & apps > See all > Games (or Apps).
  2. Highlight the game or app you want to uninstall, press the Menu button, select Uninstall, and then follow the prompts.
You can then reinstall the game or app by inserting the disc or downloading it again from the Microsoft Store or Xbox Game Pass, or by going to My games & apps > See all > Full library.
