Losing progress in a game can be a frustrating experience, especially after investing hours into a captivating world like Dredge. Fortunately, this game has a built-in feature that automatically backs up your progress, allowing you to recover lost or deleted save files with ease. This guide will walk you through the steps to restore your game from a backup file, ensuring you can return to your last saved state.
Follow these simple instructions to get back to your adventure with restored progress.

In order to restore a save from a backup, the most important things you need to do are the following:
- Find your backup
- Copy the backup file from the 'backup-save' folder to the 'saves' folder
- Rename the backup file
Don't worry! The following steps are as easy as navigating your boat in Dredge on a clear day. They will guide you through the details of the entire process.
1. Find your backup
The 'backup-saves' folder location:
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\LocalLow\Black Salt Games\Dredge\backup-saves
Inside the folder you may find one or more backup files. You may also discover that you have different backups for different saves if you're using more than one save slot (out of the 4 slots available in the game). For example, files named dredge-save0.bin.bak_0, dredge-save0.bin.bak_1, etc. would contain backups for slot 1, or files named dredge-save1.bin.bak_0, dredge-save1.bin.bak_1 and similar would contain backups for slot 2 etc. So first, you will need to identify which save file contains your missing progress.
Don't worry if you're not sure if the file you've found is correct, as you can always go back to the 'backup-save' folder and try the same steps again with a different backup.
2. Copy the backup file from the 'backup-save' folder to the 'saves' folder
Now copy (Ctrl+C) the backup file inside the 'backup-save' folder and paste it (Ctrl+V) into the 'saves' folder shown below. In the screenshot, we already copied the file dredge-save0.bin.bak_0 as an example.
The 'saves' folder location:
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\LocalLow\Black Salt Games\Dredge\saves
3. Rename the backup file
So that the game can recognise the file as a correct save, its name will need to be changed. The correct names of the saves in each of the 4 slots (whether they are empty or not) are:
- dredge-save0.bin
- dredge-save1.bin
- dredge-save2.bin
- dredge-save3.bin
That means you just need to delete the last 6 characters from the name of the file you copied from the 'backup-save' folder (.bak_0) to create a proper save file. But before you do that, check if the 'saves' folder already contains the save file you want to create. If it does, make sure to move that file outside the folder (if the file is empty or damaged, you can simply delete it) to avoid file conflicts when renaming the backup file.
So in our example we will need to change the name of dredge-save0.bin.bak_0 to dredge-save0.bin.
After you rename the file, you can go ahead and open the game to continue your fishing adventure!
